We are Beacon Academy

Outside view of Beacon Academy
Beacon Academy is a private day school designed for students whose needs cannot be met in the public day school setting.  Beacon Academy was created to support students with specific learning disabilities, psychiatric impairment, emotional dysregulation, or behavioral disturbances.

Beacon Academy is owned and operated by the Harvest Outreach Center, a non-profit organization founded by two women, a 5th grade teacher and counselor in 2004.  They saw the need to serve children’s emotional needs so that they could be better equipped for learning in the academic setting.  They began counseling, mentoring, and tutoring five children in the afterschool setting.  Today, Harvest Outreach serves more than 100 students daily, providing therapeutic services to students at their center as a supplement to the alternative school day, and in seven Campbell County schools.

At Beacon Academy, all staff are dedicated to each child’s health and well-being as a precursor to growth and learning.  Beacon holds high standards of service and quality.  The realization of each student’s growth and achievement, both personally and academically, is the ultimate goal.
Beacon Academy draws upon a variety of researched-based methods and schools of thought to derive its culture and shape its beliefs.  From the perspective of a holistic multisystem lens, Beacon Academy influences include:
  • Individual: Adlerian concepts of Significance and Belonging, and the recent works of Dan Seigel, Whole Brained Child.
  • Classroom: Positive Discipline as a means of Cooperative Learning and classroom management.
  • Learning: Piaget Constructivist Learning Theory
  • Workplace culture: Tenets of Positive Psychology Martin Seligman
  • Clinical approach: Trauma-Informed Therapies, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Dr. Ross Greene’s Collaborative Problem Solving/Lagging Skills & Unsolved School Problems (ALUSP)
